Selma: A great Civil Rights film

The film “Selma” is about the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. This film portrays some of the hardships that African Americans had to go through in the 1960’s. This film also showed the perseverance and resilience of African Americans that were apart of the civil rights movement.

I really enjoyed this film. I can really feel the emotion of Dr. Martin Luther King while watching this film. I also found that I was more emotionally attached because this film was based on true events. There were obviously some parts that triggered my emotion more than others. The most emotion driven scene was the scene in which Dr. King says that he will die if it means that African Americans will have equal rights when he is gone. I considered this a very noble thing to do and I aspire to be a man like him.

I have many things that influenced how I felt about this film including things like prior knowledge and preconceptions. I was well aware of many things that Martin Luther King Jr. accomplished before I watched this movie. Watching some of these events in the form of a film was a much different experience than I have ever had when I thought of Dr. King. It is much different reading a book about these events and actually see them happen. It drew a lot more emotion and anger while watching the film rather than reading about the events.

This film was very difficult to watch without getting angry at many of the characters. I am a white male and it upset me to see so many white leaders not act on the civil rights issues shown in the film. The white leaders did act at the end of the film, but it was forced upon them by all of the violence that the Montgomery march created. Overall, this film accurately showed many of the struggles of the African Americans and it triggered my anger because there were many white leaders that did nothing to stop the violence until they had to.
