Response to "Throwing Like a Girl"

"Throwing Like a Girl"

"Throwing Like a Girl" by James Fallows was a very interesting piece. My views of the saying "throwing like a girl" changed after I read this article. I did not realize how offensive this term was to women around the world.

Before reading this article I thought throwing like a girl was not that offensive and was just an old saying. I now realize that this term is making fun of women everywhere. Well it is scientifically proven that men are generally stronger and more athletic than women this is DEFINITELY not always the case. There are many women that are far more athletic than most males.

Fallows described what people mean when they say that someone was throwing like a girl. All young boys dreaded hearing those words because it meant that you could not throw very well. There are obviously many women today that can throw a baseball (or football for that matter) very well. This term is very sexist and should not be used.

It will be very difficult to stop such a famous saying. I have heard this saying a countless amount of times in my life. I don't think that it is possible to ever have a saying like this dissolve into thin air. The saying "throwing like a girl" will always be used but that does not mean that we can keep using the saying.

I think that the best way to stop this from being said is to explain what this means to anybody you hear say this old saying. This is the best way to stop people from using these words. I think once people realize what they are saying they will feel bad and stop using these words.

  1. I agree with you that I never really put much thought into how offensive the saying was. After reading the article it really made me wonder why we even say it anymore, given all the support women's sports has today. Unfortunately I also think you are correct in saying that the phrase will never die out, but that doesn't mean that we can't make an effort to end the phrase.

  2. I couldn't agree more with you on your argument. Being that I myself am a girl I find it to still be demeaning to women, even though most of the time people use it to poke fun at others. It just goes to show that even stereotypes such as these that were brought up years ago will still continue because people don't realize the harm it does to others.
